Default MMA vs Boxing!! Whats best????

I had this arguement with my boss the other day about how an MMA fighter would smash a boxer all round the cage, but he wasnt having any of it saying that a boxer would win because an mma fighter wouldnt get close enough to them to be able to cause any problems and a boxer would knock them out easy!!! hahaha... For a start, that is rubbish because anyone would know an mma fighter would have no problem getting close and taking down a boxer before he even managed to throw a few jabs and as soon as he had hold of the boxer it would all be over.

I think its a silly arguement really because they are entirely different sports and I think that if you can only throw punches, surely someone who can punch, kick, choke, elbow, knee etc is bound to win.

Dont get me wrong, I do like boxing too, but I feel its a dieing sport now and mma is the way forward. I think boxers are superb athletes with incredible stamina but mma is so much more exciting to watch as there are so many other eliments involved.

What is everyone elses thoughts?

Without a doubt the MMA fighter. It would only take a fake snap kick or lead punch to make him cover and then be grounded.

I have a copy of the 1st and 2nd UFC here and the boxer didn't last 2 minutes....if a minute.

I am soory guys but i really think this is a shark vs a bear .If a well rounded MMA fighter lets say George St Pierre faces a good boxer lets say Miguel Cotto one outcome 'they fight MMA rules GSP dominates him unless he gets caught a big shot then its lights out but that would be very unlikely. However if its in the boxing ring under boxing rules Cotto dominates. I have to agree with one thing though as much as i would love to see Jones Jr and Anderson silva get it on i dont think it is a good thing for either sport and it shouldnt happen.

Yeah thats right Joe, as i said, they are 2 different sports really. The arguement I was having was that my boss thinks any boxer could come into the cage under MMA rules and knock any mma fighter out no problem because an mma fighter couldnt get close enough to the boxer. Thats what I was disagreeing with.

It was just fraustrating having someone who knows nothing about MMA saying that!

I could feel a flying knee to the nose, several elbows, some ground and pound, followed by triangle coming on, had to control myself! LOL

I thought we were talking about in an MMA fight.

If it was just a boxing fight then most likely the boxer dependent
on the styles in which the MMA fighter practiced in.

I think it was answered at the very first UFC in the fight between Royce Gracie and Art Jimmerson (see below).

I can't believe Jimmerson came in with a boxing glove on

Ok he might not have been the best boxer, but he was apprently the no.10 ranked light heavyweight (IBF) at the time but I struggle to think of any boxer who has achieved any real success in MMA and those that have had any, have add to develop an all round fighting style.

There's always the puncher's change but really it's a no contest before it even starts!
