Default MMA at the Olympics?

What do you guys think about this?

Currently the fighting events consist of Boxing, Judo and Taekwando, plus the wrestling events Greco-Roman and Freestyle.

I think that Mixed Martial Arts would be a brilliant addition to the Olympic games and a great platform for up and coming fighters from around the world. It would need to be at amateur level, using the current amateur MMA rules etc.

It would also be a fantastic boost for the sport as the Olympic pulls in an amazing amount of global viewers.

im with you on this jarrod i think it would be good for the sport as u said the viewers would have there eyes opened and shown that mma is not all burtal punch ups and is a great technical sport like boxing or judo etc (well as they are both used in mma lol)

as far as making it to much of a commercial sport i dont see why that would be a bad thing as no matter what level it goes to your gunna have the fighters who take the sport and follow it 100% and the kids who want to learn a self defence method or even just to keep fit gyms wld there for have more income, which inturn means better training equitment etc,

so yes to sum it all up i think mma shld be represented in the olympics after all 3 of its basic founding sports are and it hasnt ruined judo or wrestleing or even boxing for that matter if anything it has helped them buy giving much needed publicity.

p.s sorry about the spelling

Its a great idea but it cant I dont think. Or can it? the others are points based MMA is not apart from rounds awarded. Lets break them down.

Judo - points based. Awarded through Ippon for submission, pin or major throw - finishes bout, indicates KO etc. other points for other stuff.

Boxing - points based through punch count etc, or of course KO.

Taekwando - points based as in shotokan karate I guess, or KO.

Wrestling - Pin or submission based? Again points through throw to back etc.

So MMA - Yes submission or KO based like the others. But all the others have a scoring system too. MMA would need to show a system whereby points are scored accumulatively throughout - by effective unblocked strikes, Throws to back etc. But its difficult with no fixed technical style.

Good idea though if it can be engineered correctly. The world needs to see MMA is not vicious, it is technical and skillful - and above all a sport not a streetfight.

Plus, there is nothing better for kids to learn I dont think. Apart from perhaps Judo.

I think it'd be a good thing to be included,
MMA fighters are highly trained, highly skilled athletes, and to be included in the olympics would be great to show to world this,
Though the chances of this happening are incredibly slim, unfortunately, as Rugby has only just found it's way back in, and that has a larger fan base than MMA, and already had a good standing as an international sport through being in the commonwealth games

Hi guys I think its a great idea, but I think a sticking point would be the fact that for a sport to be included it has to have a certain level of active participants. So lets get the word out and get more people involved.

Seriously? Have you seen some of the obscure sports that take place in the Olympics? There are a lot more than the popular ones that are televised. And what's wrong with the commercialisation of MMA anyway? Sounds like a win-win to me.
