Default should the stand up rule be dropped?

Hey guys thought i would pop a post up as im a newb, just wondering how many of you think that the ref shldnt have the power to stand fighters up when there on the ground?

imo they shldnt as if either fighter can hold the other down for 5 mins then so be it at he is controling the fight and they can still score that also it would force the "strikers" to work more on there ju jitsu/wrestling and not rely on that k.o power like some do.

so what you all think

That's actually quite interesting. It could make for some dull fights, but as you said that should be their choice, and not the refs. Ye, infact I completely agree (didn't think I would when I came into this thread!)

NO!

The reason the ref stands em up is because it's boring for the fans to watch 2 fighters locked together doing nothing.

It doesn't matter whether you agree with that or not. What counts is the fans, if it wasn't for them the promoter wouldn't sell any tickets . If no tickets are sold, no fighters get paid!

If you're a professional fighter the main requirements of your job are to make weight and put on a good show.

More fans = More tickets sold = Better purses for fighters

See, that's what I came into this thread thinking. But if it put the pressure into stikers to learn proper ground skills. Would that not make the fights exciting - if they could get out without the refs help -

Most fighters are working on their all round game any way...Strikers generally work their ground game so they can get up if taken down, Like wise grappler's work to improve their stand up so they can use their strikes to get into grappling range and utilise their vertical grappling and take downs more effectively.

At the end of the day if a fighter is exciting to watch and/or has a large fan base/following they will be asked back. If they aren't that good in certain areas they end up being cannon fodder to bolster the fight records of those that are putting the time in.

IMHO this is pressure enough for fighters to improve their all round game!

True, but there are a lot of strikers who are quite happy to stay in their defensive guard waiting to be stood up

I agree, but they aren't doing themselves any favours, if they stay there too long there wasting energy and losing points. No striker wants to lose points on the floor when they could be stood up earning them. Another incentive to learn how to get back to their feet as quickly as possible.

I can see it from both sides of the argument,
Really in two minds about it, as said above, it would be boring to just watch nothing happen for ages, and at the end of the day, it's all for the fans,
But getting rid of it would force stronger ground work

Yeah great post NoGlcorbaian!!

It think this arguement could go on forever, as mentioned, I do agree its important for the fans to be kept entertained and if that means standing the fighters up because of a stale mate on the floor, then it has to be done for the good of the sport. I also agree there should be more done to stop fighters from just waiting to be stood up and they should maybe be penalised for it, and I can see that perhaps by getting rid of the stand up rule, fighters would have to more aggressive and trained to get themselves up.

I dunno, tricky one!!
