Default Hey Guys!

Hey guys, my name is Ben i'm 17 years old and I'm from south wales, bridgend.
For some odd reason i've taken a real liking to MMA, but there is one little problem, there aren't any gyms or places around the bridgend area that teach MMA, they only teach it in places where I cant reach because it costs too much money or I can't get a lift there. I was just wondering does anybody know anywhere around the bridgend area where they do MMA? and could someone tell me the training for MMA because from what I hear it's meant to be very good for cardio, and I think this would be very beneficial for me because next year I want to join the Royal Marines.

Thanks very much for your time guys!

Ben

Welcome to the forum Ben!

MMA is a great choice of sport to take a liking to

I don't know of any gyms in Wales, but I'm sure some of our local members can help you out. New gyms are popping up everywhere at the moment so I'm sure there will be one on your doorstep sooner or later anyway. If there isn't a gym you can reach at the moment it might be worth starting to learn 1 or 2 arts at specialist gyms, such as Boxing or Thai Boxing and Ju Jitsu or Judo as they will all help your all-round MMA.

Have you done any training in the past?

Thanks for joining!

Ben I just done some digging around. I couldn't find an out-and-out MMA gym but I found some great alternatives close by. These are what I'd recommend for now:

Ground Training - BJJ

This academy is run by Phillip Akins, a top BJJ fighter and looks like great place to learn the art! They have some good competition fighters and a good training team.

More details here: http://www.sdfwales.co.uk/index.php

Akins Academy / Checkmat
Robert Price Centre, Llangeinor, Bridgend. CF32 8PF

Stand-up Training - Muay Thai

Apparently there is a very good Muay Thai academy run at Pyshiqu Gym in Brackla. It is run by a guy called Paul on Wednesday and Sunday nights and he comes highly recommended. Contact details are:

Physique Health & Fitness Centre,16-19, The Triangle Shopping Centre, Brackla, Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan CF31 2LL.
Tel: 01656 668177

Hope that helps!

Hi mate,

Thanks for choosing the UK's number one MMA Forum!

Im sure you will get the answers your looking for here.

Like Jarrod said, if you cant find a dedicated MMA Gym then go for a different diciplin that will compliment your mma when you do find somewhere.

Good suggestions by the way Jarrod.

Welcome Ben,

My honest opinion is: Do each discipline in seperate gyms! But have a gym where you can bring them all together to train full MMA.

Sounds like Jarrod has found the main two disciplines you need in Muay Thai and BJJ. All you need now is somewhere/someone to teach you wrestling and/or Judo and you're away

Good Luck Fella, Keep us posted

Thanks for your input mate appreciated. I guess I want to join the marines because it's a passion, and I really want to become a marine.

Nah, Haven't done any in the past, me and my mate was going to do Kung Fu, but he's changed his mind. But i'm now thinking of doing Ninjutsu, will that prepare me for MMA?

Thanks
Ben
