Hi Guys Im new to site but this is a great post! Its interesting to read about everyones different paths they have taken through training.

A little about me, I have just turned 30 (its never too late!!), around 72-73kg usually and I am in pretty good shape, training about 8 hours per week. Thai, submission and mma and some cardio, circuits and weight training

I started out in Judo when I was about 12, by the time I was 14 i had quit that in favour of weekend cider binges and Super Nes...

I didnt train again until I stopped skateboarding in 2000 at the age of 20 and I started training in kickboxing. I was still looking around for something that I thought would be good for fitness and self defence and so I dropped kickboxing for Wing Chun Kung Fu and trained this for 3 years.

I moved to Bristol for a bit and met a wing chun instructor who also taught JKD concepts and Jun Fan, Kali and submission grappling. I trained this for a year or so and then decided grappling was for me so when I went back to Uni in London I started at Gracie Barra training under Marc Walder.

Then I got into weight training more and more and quit all the martial arts completely! My weight went up from 75 to 90 over a couple of years and I got a massive gut, but much stronger. I hit 115 kg for 2 on bench at 88kg which is good for me, 130kg for 5 deads at 88kg and 120kg for 5 squat (poor squat I know!).

After I graduated I came back down south and dropped the BJJ for submission grappling and Muay Thai and stopped weight training.

I have on off about 2 years Muay Thai with an excellent instructor who was British team and British Champ. In that time I travelled to Thailand and also trained there for 4 weeks, mostly 1 on 1 private sessions which was great.

Now I have a little bit of everything, but am yet to become proficient at anything in particular, I am hopeful that will change this year.

I am now lucky to train privately in muay thai and privately in mma, my muay thai coach is as said earlier a former champ who has fought in thailand on numerous occasions, and my mma instructor is also great. He is a BJJ brown, 3rd dan (or 2nd) in Judo, ex-british team and British championship gold medalist and also cage rage veteran.

Hopefully in the coming months\years I will hone what I have and start fighting. I am hopefully fighting amateur mma this year for the first time.

Thanks

hahaha.... nice quote mate!

Great post, sounds like you have lots of experience. Do you think all your different styles you have trained will help when you fight mma, or will it be more of a hinderence? What I mean by that is do the different styles compliment each other or conflict each other?

Do you actually use the various styles or do you tend to stick with a certain style?

hi Perry,

To be honest at first it was a real hinderance as in wing chun and jkd I stood southpaw as my jab was faster, when I started muay thai thai this made things harder because I had to switch as I am right footed and right handed and wanted to keep my right leg at the rear.

The judo helped me with the grapping though as some things I still use and can remember like uchi mata, ogoshi, juji gatama (arm bar) and sangako jime (triangle)

In terms of mma some of the jkd is applicable, but I prefer to stick with muay thai and submission grapping now and never train any of the kung fu or jkd.

I just wish I fouind the right path sooner (like when I was 21)!

Cheers

hey guys,

my history reads -
did BJJ for bout 2years on and off when i was about 12, then did nothing until 19, when i jumped on it and started training twice a week in the gym doing 3-4 of weights and cardio. I also train 2 - 3 times a week doing kickboxing/submission all taught by a couple of guys who are really knowledgable (not quite sure of their grades) but easily have 35years exp between 2 of em! and ones only 22!
Id really like to do some wrestling aswell in a few years just to grasp the basics. and maybe wish id done tae qwon do when i was younger to help with the main offensive techniques. But i do think that the kickboxing is really one of the best base martial arts for mma.

boxed as a kid, Muay Thai and JKD for quite a while in my twenties but injury kept interupting. Was inactive for a few years and back in training doing MMA now. (still take extra Muay Thai when I can, I love it).
