Just had my 1st muay thai sparring session. Didn't know we were gonna be sparring as it was just an extra training session (it's usually just on tuesdays). I was the one of the only people that turned up from the beginnerish lot (I started in september).
In the 1st round I held my own, didn't get hit badly and managed to get in a clinch and land a few knees, wasn't sure about the rules for takedowns in the clinch so didn't try to trip (could someone explain?). The next round was against a different guy and it's safe to say I got my ass handed to me there. Landed a couple of shots but my technique was terrible, and I kept getting countered. Although I did catch a kick and deck him which I was pretty chuffed about. The 3rd and 4th rounds were (strangely) against 2 girls, I found it quite hard to hit them in the face, I never thought I really would as it's just sparring but it seemed pretty wrong. Then she punched me in the face which made it a bit easier to hit her. In the 4th the velcro in my glove came loose, stuck to the other glove and effectively tied my hands together (not the best situation for a fight!) I've never heard of that happening, but it meant taking a few shots to the face. How did you guys get on your 1st time? It made me really realise how important it is to keep your hands up, and your head moving. Also, I found that I somehow kept ending up standing southpaw which was a pain. Although, I found jabbing with the right hand pretty useful. |
